Church History

Under Construction

  • The earliest record of the Edinburg Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is when Ellen Saum was baptized by Rev. Robert Ferguson of Zion Christian Church of Maurertown in 1836. We were originially part of the O'Kelly movement. Some of our earliest ministers included Joseph Ferguson, George Able and Henry Dillan. While the congregation met in members' homes and at the Christian Church in Narrow Passage for a number of years, in 1856, the congregation broke ground at our current location at 210 Center Street in Edinburg. This is the date that can be seen on the cornerstone. While the church building was begun in 1856, it was not completed until after the war in 1869, due to lack of funds. Some ministers that served the church during this time were Jacob Creath, R.C. Cave, J.A. Campbell, P.S. Rhodes, I. Bauserman and W.J. Coche. The church was originally constructed with two doors in front, so there were separate entrances for men and women. It was not until 1898 that the central door and bell tower were added. Also, according to a local history, the ministers of the Christian Church, or Campbellites as they were called, were not allowed to preach at other local churches due to their "heretical" beliefs. Some of the ministers who served in the early 1900s were J.A. Cowgill, R. B. Mitchell, W.S. Hoye, P.S. Rhodes, J.A. Hopkins, Henry C. Mayhew, Mitchell Hoye, Wm. Meredith Norment and E.B. David. In the 1920s, Edinburg Christian Church began to share a minister with the Woodstock Christian Church, and this would continue through the tenure of Rev. Warren Brubaker in 2002. In 1932, current member Ona Evans was the first to be baptized in the new baptistry installed in the sanctuary. Current member Guy Mantz was baptized that day too. In the 1950s, local carpenter Jake Sheetz made our current chancel furnishings. In 1952, the furnace, kitchen and downstairs classrooms were added. This was when the congregation, much like most churches in the United States in existence then, was at its height in worship and Sunday School attendance. May members still remember Rev. Edwin B. Wolford, who pastored from 1945- 1969. Rev. William H. Whitehurst was here from 1972-1980, and this was when the church began to accept baptisms from other denominations. Rev. Warren Brubaker served the church from 1985- 2002, when the church made such improvements as a handicapped ramp and a new sound system. With the retirement of Rev. Brubaker, Edinburg Christian Church and Woodstock Christian Church decided to part ways. With faith and generous endowments from members of the church, the congregation began to look for their own full time minister. In November, 2003, they called Rev. Debbie Harmon as their first full time pastor. Since then, the congregation has engaged in the Taking the Name of Jesus evangelism program, and has worked towards building the future of the church. Thanks to various efforts, our ministry with children has been growing in recent years, and we continue to have creative and innovative worship experiences. Edinburg Christian Church has well been described as a warm, welcoming church. One of the greatest strengths of the congregation is how we support and encourage each other. Our members are our greatest asset. Not only is this a place where old friends meet, but new friends are welcomed and invited to join with us in ministry as well.
